The Seoul
Museum of Art presents a solo exhibition “Rola Rolls” by eobchae, selected as
the artist of 2024 SeMA Emerging Artist & Curators
Supporting Program, through August 30 at SeMA Bunker.
“Lola
Rolls” is an exhibition that imagines the future of humanity in the face of an
accelerating climate crisis and questions the current state of technology and
capitalism based on the science fiction imagination of humans becoming an
evolved species called ‘Lola’ in a future where fossil fuels are depleted and
humans adapt themselves to a new environment.
Through
“Lola Rolls,” the artists, who have been working on various technologies such
as artificial intelligence and blockchain, present a new narrative that breaks
away from the human-centered narrative without overlooking the importance of
technology in the future of humanity as the climate crisis intensifies.
eobchae (Nahee
Kim, Cheonseok Oh, Hwi Hwang) is an audio-visual production that began its
activities in 2017. They continuously work across various media boundaries,
including video, web, sound, and performance. They weave speculative worldviews
by closely examining the rapidly advancing new technologies and environments,
focusing on perspectives omitted or erased in these processes.
They have held solo exhibitions at DOOSAN Gallery
(2022, Seoul), Museumhead (2022, Seoul), and Nam June Paik Art Center (2019,
Seoul). They have also participated in numerous group exhibitions and projects,
such as Frieze Film (2022, Seoul), ARKO Art Center (2022, Seoul), Hite
Collection (2020, Seoul), Ilmin Museum of Art (2020, Seoul), and Seoul Museum
of Art, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art (2018, Seoul). In 2021, they received the 12th
DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Award.
