Hapjungjigu presents a solo exhibition “Lest the bare sand should harm the serpent-bearing head” by Yeju Roh, selected as the SeMA Emerging Artists & Curators Support Program for 2024, through August 18.

“Lest the bare sand should harm the serpent-bearing head” is an exhibition that takes its name from a phrase that ambiguously refers to the confrontation between Medusa and Perseus, ‘Lest the bare sand should harm the serpent-bearing head,’ and explores the complex and delicate sensations that exist between those who stand together and those who stand apart amidst the structural violence of society. The 21 paintings in this exhibition showcase the artist's attitude of paying attention to the smallest acts of 'us', rather than the tactics of 'heroes' who try to confront the real world.

The 21 new paintings in this exhibition depict scenes from the artist's activities, including the Vigil, an animal rights movement, the Myeongdong Redevelopment District 2 protest, the Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination’s struggle for mobility rights, and the forced closure of Yong Joo Gol in Paju. In addition, nine linked texts documenting the sites are also available at the exhibition.
