The 2024 Busan Biennale, which opened on August 17, will continue with various associated programs until October 20. Under the theme "Seeing in the Dark," this year's Biennale features 349 works by 62 artists (teams) from 36 countries.

Beyond the artists, the Biennale brings together participants from diverse cultural backgrounds and fields, including writers, educators, instrument makers, doctors, DJs, multidisciplinary researchers, and religious figures. The associated programs, praised for their depth and artistic exploration, further enrich the Biennale's offerings.

The second program of the 2024 Busan Biennale, titled “Playing in the Dark,” consists of audience-participatory sound performances, DJ sets, and sound projects, taking place at the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art and HANSUNG1918, which has been transformed into a venue dedicated to sound projects.

Performance Program

First, the performance program is divided into three sections that engage the audience directly.

The first performance, “Tape Music” by Taiwanese artist Lin Chi-Wei, is held every Sunday at 3 pm in the lobby on the second floor of the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art. This program demonstrates the process of forming a temporary community through spontaneous collaboration and performance with the audience, turning collective intelligence into creative output.

On the other hand, Layne Waerea’s “Free Promises” and Rajyashri Goody’s “No real good can be secured by over-modesty” concluded successfully in August. “Free Promises” explored the concept of social promises by offering 'free promises' to participants, while “No real good can be secured by over-modesty” reinterpreted the Buddha's act of placing a ‘begging bowl’ upside down, with the artist flipping a bowl designated by the audience one by one.

Side B Program
