The 8th Typojanchi 2023: International Typography Biennale Open Quotation Marks, Close Quotation Marks will take place from September 19 to October 14 at Culture Station Seoul 284. It features 53 artists from 16 countries and includes works by Slavs and Tatars and JJJJJerome ELLIS.
The theme of this project is “Typography and Sound,” and the works on display explore the linguistic interstices created by spoken and written language, intersect with visions and hearing, the rhythm of letters and sounds, the labor and craft behind them, and the use of technology and media.
The exhibition is divided into thematic and project exhibitions, with 32 artists participating in the thematic exhibition and four in the project exhibition. The works range from books and installations to websites, videos, carpets, comics, and more. Also, there are performance programs such as reading scripts on a large 100-meter scroll (SOHN Youngeun), oral impromptu performance using writing actions, verbal commentary expressions, and blackboard drawings (YANG Yu-Chiao), and workshops to create ‘alternative texts’. These programs provide multiple ways to approach typography.
