A solo exhibition by artist Lee Bul (b. 1964) will be on view at BB&M from August 26 to October 14.
Lee is best known for her early iconic ‘Cyborg’ series and the performance < Abortion > (1989). The artist, who has presented unconventional and provocative works in the context of women and the body, has gradually expanded her explorations from the tendencies of her early works. This exhibition presents works that speak to the collapse of the progressive project and its traces based on reflections on the technological age.
The exhibition consists of one installation and seven works from the abstract painting series ‘Perdu’. The installation < Willing To Be Vulnerable – Metalized Balloon V6 > (2023) speaks to the promise of technological rationalism and its disintegration. Works such as the silver balloon recall the solid surfaces of machines, but, according to the preface, they are also linked to the errors and historical traumas caused by manmade materials. In the series ‘Perdu’, multicolored fragments are layered on top of each other, with mother-of-pearl shards shining through. The title “Perdu” means “lost” in French, which, according to the artist, is also a reference to soldiers deployed on the front lines.
In this exhibition, we will be able to see Lee Bul’s latest works from 2023, which will allow us to see the artist’s expanded oeuvre beyond the works we are familiar with.
