The esteemed Dansaekhwa artist Park Seo-Bo passed away on October 14, 2023, at the age of 92. A pivotal figure in the avant-garde art realm, Park Seo-Bo was celebrated for his monochromatic creations, most notably his Ecriture series, characterized by repetitive line-drawing acts, which he began to seriously work on around 1973 in the aftermath of the Five Korean Artists and Five White Paintings exhibition at Tokyo’s Hara Museum of Contemporary Art. Over the course of more than 40 years, he continuously explored and evolved his materials and colors, establishing himself as a master in the field. 

Dansaekhwa art has since emerged as a representative genre of Korean contemporary art. Since 2010, this style of art has captured the interest of both local and global art markets. However, a comprehensive definition that adequately encompasses this significant Korean art movement has yet to be established. For Dansaekhwa to be truly appreciated in global art history, it must be recognized not only for its individual artists but also for its distinct identity as an art movement and its unique attributes in contrast to other artistic movements.
