Chung Hyun, an artist represented by PKM
Gallery, was featured on the Editor’s Picks list for Art Basel Miami Beach
2024, held from December 4 to 8.
The editorial team at Art Basel Miami Beach
selected seven unmissable projects from the fair. Among the selected galleries were PKM Gallery
(Seoul), Michael Rosenfeld Gallery (New York), Galerie Mitterrand (Paris),
Proyectos Ultravioleta (Guatemala), Meredith Rosen Gallery (New York), and
Welancora Gallery (New York).
In the Survey sector, which focuses on
works created before the year 2000, PKM Gallery presented a solo project by
sculptor Chung Hyun. The editorial team highlighted Chung’s 1997 bronze head
sculptures and tar drawings, commenting, “Chung Hyun’s works, which explore
human spirituality and energy, allow for diverse interpretations based on the
viewer’s perspective.”
Chung exhibited a total of 22 pieces at the
fair, including 10 drawings and 12 sculptures, of which 10 were sold. Among the
buyers was reportedly a member of the executive committee of Art Basel Miami
Beach.
Chung Hyun (b. 1956) explores
the human form through discarded materials such as railway sleepers, metal,
rubble, and coal tar. By utilizing these materials, he investigates the
timeless nature of the human spirit and energy. Through minimal intervention,
he maximizes their inherent qualities and stimulates discussions about time,
memory, and history.
Chung has held solo exhibitions
at prestigious art institutions both in Korea and internationally including the
National Museum of Modern Art (Gwacheon, Korea), Nam-Seoul Museum of Art
(Seoul, Korea), Kumho Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Kim Chong Yung Museum
(Seoul, Korea), Jardin du Palais Royal (Paris, France), and Today Art Museum
(Beijing, China). Chung has received several awards, including the Kim Sechoong
Sculpture Award (2014), the AICA Korea Award (2009), Artist of the Year 2006
from the MMCA (2006), and Artist Today 2004 (2004).
