PIBI Gallery presents a solo exhibition
“Beyond the Canvas” by Kyojun Lee, from August 14 to September 28.
Known for his Geometrical Abstract
Painting, Lee has been constantly questioning the nature of art and
experimenting with various media and materials for over 50 years, and all of
his works are interconnected and present a consistent direction of 'flatness'
and 'division'. This exhibition at PIBI Gallery, “Beyond the canvas,” focuses
on his recent paintings that question the nature of painting through objective
analysis and exploration.
Through his latest works, Lee proposes to
continue his serious consideration of the plane, pushing us beyond the
categories we have come to recognize as painting. His latest works are similar
to his previous works in that they are divided into rational planes through the
horizontal and vertical, but a new form of division is found behind the canvas.
The artist uses a tightly woven fabric that
allows light to penetrate through every fold, allowing the viewer's gaze to
travel through the canvas to the space beyond the canvas and back again. The
structure of the aluminum supports that support the canvas overlaps with the
divisions drawn on the plane, suggesting new divisions and space, and inviting
the viewer to discover new forms and a sense of space.
