Hakgojae Gallery presents a solo exhibition “The day of dazzling” by KIM Sundoo, on view through August 17. The title of the exhibition, borrowed from the poem The day of dazzling by Seo Jung-ju, reflects the KIM’s long-standing concerns and thematic awareness of the nature of life.
KIM Sundoo is an artist who has built a unique body of work by reinterpreting Korean painting with a modern sensibility. He uses the traditional ‘jangji’ technique, which involves layering multiple layers of paint on dense, sturdy sheet of jangji paper to create color, to add depth to his works.
His work goes beyond merely capturing the beauty of nature, but also contains thoughts on the relationship between humans and nature, and life and art. In addition to On the Way in Midnight (2024), Daytime Stars (2021-2024), and Flowers That Never Wither (2024), which depict natural landscapes, the exhibition also features the series Beautiful days (2021-2024), which depicts figures such as athletes and poets representative of an era. The 36 works can be found in the main building and the basement of the new building at Hakgojae Gallery.
