On the May 16, the Ilwoo Foundation, a public interest foundation under the Hanjin Group, announced that it has selected artist Hwayeon Nam as the winner of this year’s Ilwoo Art Awards.

The Ilwoo Foundation has expanded the Ilwoo Photography Awards, which has been held since 2009, and reorganized it as the Ilwoo Art Awards from this year. This year’s competition, which received a total of 148 applicants, was judged in two rounds of rigorous screening by five judges: Till Fellrath & Sam Bardaouil, directors of the Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart; Jienne Liu, head of curator of department of National Art Storage Center, MMCA, KIM Sung woo, director of Primary Practice; and Jeesun Park, director of the Art Basel VIP Representative of Korea.

Nam, the inaugural recipient of the Ilwoo Art Awards, has been working on a research-based approach to reinterpreting historical and physical time in a non-linear way. Nam will present her new work at Ilwoo Space in the second half of 2025. She will also receive KRW 30,000,000 for production costs and KRW 30,000,000 worth of airline tickets for her artistic activities.
