The exhibition “The 2nd Insect Women,” featuring works by nine domestic and international artists, is on view at SS2: Space Soda until June 2. Curated by Juwon Choi, this exhibition presents sculptures, videos, paintings, and installations by female artists of various generations, including Kim yoonjoo, Mariko Mori, boma pak, shin min, Woonhae Yea, Jang pa, Soyoung Chung, Ju hyeyoung, and Jiji Kim, that express their interpretations of contemporary femininity. The exhibition explores artistic practices that counter the fear and hatred generated by the ideology of contemporary Korean society and seek a more compassionate and inclusive society.
Beginning with a deconstruction of Kim Ki-young’s 1972 film The Insect Woman, the 2023 exhibition “The Insect Women” explores the representation of women of the time through the film’s protagonist. In 2024, the exhibition “The 2nd Insect Women” will be held as a continuation of the series.
This exhibition will tell the story of the stereotypes of contemporary Asian women amidst the extreme polarization of modern society. In particular, Mariko Mori’s KUMANO (1991-1992), which will be shown in Korea for the first time in 14 years, is a pioneering work that utilizes the latest technology of the time to depict the identity of Asian women.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a performance program. SS2: SPACE SODA 2022 serves as a multi-purpose space and café, rejecting fixed images of white cubes and alternative spaces. Instead, the space itself is utilized as a backdrop for interaction with the artworks and the audience. Through this interaction, the audience can actively appreciate the exhibition and experience new aesthetic perspectives.
