HITE Collection presents a group exhibition “Undo Effects” on view through June 29. As an artistic practice, the exhibition problematizes the emphasis that exhibitions place on theatrics and the spectacle of the artwork and its external effects, and argues that the true power of an artwork should be revealed in the artwork itself, not in its external devices or visual effects.
The curator of this exhibition believes that even though technologies have been developed since the pandemic to turn artworks into data and to make experiences in virtual space more realistic, they have not been able to fully realize the sensations of the human five senses and the body as a whole, which paradoxically reminds us of the importance of the material conditions of real bodies and objects.
And the exhibition reflects on the point where post-modern exhibitions have emphasized the effect of spectacle and directed the viewer’s experience toward entertainment, and to this end, it emphasizes the physical presentation of the artworks themselves and considers the fundamental and anti-spectacle of mediums such as painting, sculpture, and video. In other words, “Undue Effect” reflects on the nature of exhibitions and focuses on the inherent power of artworks themselves.
The participating artists are Hyun Bhin Kwon, Hana Kim, Minji Song, Jisan Ahn, Tai-Jung Um, Ji Hye Yeom, Eunu Lee, Heejoon Lee, Seo Young Chang, Chun Kook-kwang, and Hanna Cho, and the works include painting, sculpture, installation, and video.
