Primary
Practice presents “Shadow beyond
the window” by JO Hyejin through July 21. JO Hyejin, a sculptor based in Seoul,
carefully observes communal lifestyles and cultural codes encountered in
everyday life, translating and varying them through the language of art.
In “Shadow
beyond the window,” JO focuses on images circulated, consumed, and distributed
on online platforms. These images on digital screen lose their narrative
potential and instead perpetually project a sense of nowness. However, the
artist imagines the stories of others through photo reviews of specific
products and the heaps of similar objects searched for online, envisioning
their private and intimate spaces. By translating these into material form, JO
gives these images a corporeal presence. In this way, the artist seeks to grasp
the elusive nature of images and the unreachable essence of stories amidst the
sense of touch and ambiguous forms.
JO has had six solo
exhibitions including “Look, Shape, Place” (Space Willing N Dealing, Seoul,
2021), “Shape, From the Side: Reading Documents” (d/ p, Seoul, 2019), and has
participated in numerous group exhibitions such as International “Typography
Biennale 2023 - Open Quotation Marks, Close Quotation Marks” (Culture Station
Seoul 284, Seoul, 2023), “Gangneung international art festival 2022 - tale of a
city” (Gangneung, 2022), “21st Century Monument-On the Abosulte” (Amado Art
Space, Seoul, 2021), “Salt of the Jungle” (Asean Culture House, Busan, 2017), “An
Illustrated Book of Plants: The flora and its poetic evidences” (MMCA, Seoul,
2016).
