ROOM, a space project running at the Leeum Museum of Art is one of the places where you discover emerging artists making a mark in the Korean art scene.
Participating in this project is artist Boma Pak (b. 1988), who works with drawings, objects, and performances, as well as utilizes ephemeral materials like light, air, and fragrance to create spaces for the overlooked entities in our society. Pak also represents the unnoticed fragments and traces in contemporary society while embracing diverse identities.
Boma Pak’s exhibition “Ritual of Matter” transforms ROOM into the reception area of a fictional company, Sophie Etulips Xylang Co. The space feels almost like a stage set. Seemingly portraits of company executives hang on the walls, and the interior mimics the glass facades and marble décor of a corporate office building. However, the space evokes a somewhat uncanny feeling. The artist aimed to capture the fleeting impressions one experiences in an office setting rather than a precise reproduction of an office space. The faint vibrations on the walls, the fading scent, and ambiguous sounds that fill the space, and the various objects on display are transient objects, representing things that are generally considered useless in neoliberal society. Through this project, the artist commemorates both the fleeting visitors who take a momentary rest in this space and the objects that will disappear after the project.
