The 13th Photographers of the Year exhibition at the Goeun Museum of Photography provides an opportunity to explore the direction of contemporary Korean photography. The Goeun Museum of Photography and KT&G Sangsangmadang have been collaborating since 2012 to organize curated exhibitions that discover and support emerging photographers with a focus on experimental spirit and high-quality photographic works, offering insights into the future and possibilities of Korean photography.
This exhibition features the works of artists selected as the “Artist of the Year” and “Finalist of the Year,” namely Dongsin Seo, Junyong Cho, and Jinsup Cho.
Dongsin Seo, chosen as the “Finalist of the Year,” is an artist who utilizes photography to discover abstract forms within concrete images. In this exhibition, he employs digital techniques on pre-captured photographs to explore the aesthetic potential of abstract images beyond the inherent characteristics of the photograph. Seo studied photography at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Lucerne, Switzerland, and has held solo exhibitions at KT&G Sangsangmadang and Illum Gallery, among others.
Junyong Cho captures the hidden aspects of urban spaces, depicting the “temporality” experienced by people living in these urban environments. In this exhibition, he connects four series into a single sequence, expanding the concept of time images into spatial images. Cho holds a degree in photography from Seoul National University of Arts and a master’s degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London. He received the 2015 Amado Photography Award from Amado Art Space.
Jinsup Cho, engaged in documentary work on refugees, contemplates new documentary formats through diverse recording methods. In this exhibition, Cho presents the project Land of G, documenting refugees residing in South Korea amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Cho graduated from the École de Photographie EFET in Paris, and in 2016, Cho received the documentary category award at the 1x Photo Awards in France.
For the 13th KT&G SKOPF, Dongsin Seo, Junyong Cho, and Jinsup Cho were selected as the “Artists of the Year” in June 2022, and their developed works over the next six months underwent evaluation. Dongsin Seo, with his work Equation, was named the final artist of the Year.
