The Art Sonje Center has announced its 2024 exhibition program exploring the contemporary art world with the keywords ‘Trans,’ ‘Time,’ and ‘Possibility.’. Through these keywords, the museum aims to examine the new possibilities that contemporary art can offer in the current global crisis, transcending boundaries and experimenting with the fundamental meanings of time and space.
The featuring exhibition for 2024 is the solo exhibition of artist Do Ho Suh, scheduled for August. It will be Suh’s first exhibition at the Art Sonje Center since his inaugural solo exhibition at the museum in 2003. The exhibition will showcase Suh’s new work from the Speculations series, which the artist has been working on since 2005, exploring universal stories about the movement and intersection of cultures and the global conditions of life.
The second major exhibition in June will showcase Ho Tzu Nyen, a media and performance artist and filmmaker from Singapore. Co-organized with the Singapore Art Museum, the Art Sonje Center’s unique presentation will unfold around T for Time, showcasing the essence of Ho Tzu Nyen’s artistic world. Ho Tzu Nyen has been exploring and presenting issues of Asian modernity as universal problems for the past two decades.
From February to May, the Art Sonje Center will also host exhibitions by Rinus Van de Velde and Dan Lee, young and emerging international artists gaining attention in the global art scene. Rinus Van de Velde, based in Antwerp, is known for shaping new narratives between fact and fiction. Based in Berlin, Dan Lee explores the meaning of spiritual existence within the cycle of birth and death, presenting dimensions of stories we may not have recognized.
In May, the museum will feature exhibitions introducing young Korean artists, including solo exhibitions by Jeongsu Woo and Yona Lee. Woo explores a new language of narrative painting, while Lee attempts site-specific interventions in space and objects.
Additionally, the museum will hold diverse exhibition projects such as a theatrical exhibition exploring the relationship between language, body, and sound, a re-examination of the issues of migration from a post-colonial perspective, a redefinition of human involvement in the climate crisis and the transformation of ecological challenges into moments of revolution, and an exploration of the relationship between art and ecology in an exhibition by Ikkibawikrrr.
All exhibitions at the Art Sonje Center aim to provide a comprehensive view of the contemporary art world, embracing experimentation and pushing the boundaries while reflecting on our planet’s critical issues.
