Space Willing N Dealing is pleased to present “Day and Night”, a solo exhibition by artist Kim Hyewon (b. 1993), on view through January 17. In her first solo exhibition, “Thickness of Pictures,” held in 2022, the artist explored the theme of “the movement of place. In this exhibition, the artist will present works of various landscapes with the theme of the movement of time. For the artist, “time” refers to the length of the sun and the change of seasons due to its rotation and revolution, and she captures the changing landscape according to the movement of the sun.

The artist’s subject matter is the surrounding landscape that exists. These include colorful signs in the city center, natural landscapes, subways and buses, and familiar places inside, but not a single person is present. By deliberately removing people from the picture and leaving only various structures, the formativeness and colorful qualities of the components are highlighted. As a result, the perspective is emphasized and a strong sense of space is revealed that we don’t normally feel.

Kim perceives ‘image’ as an optical phenomenon, and chooses places that are familiar to everyone and records them with photographs. She then decides what kind of landscape she wants to paint by observing the photographs and creating the finished image in her imagination. The artist believes that the moment she draws an object, he is fully exercising his drawing skills. Through her work, she clearly shows the dichotomy between recognizing the object of creation with a specific idea and the step of implementing it (drawing).

Kim Hyewon (b.1993) lives and works in Seoul, South Korea, where she graduated from Hongik University, Department of Painting, and  Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Graduate School of Plastic Arts.
