“Self-Portrait” Installation view ©TOPOHAUS

TOPOHAUS presents “Self-Portrait” by Suh Yongsun on view through March 17. This exhibition features 27 paintings and one sculpture depicting self-portraits from 1995 to 2024.

“Self-Portrait” is an exhibition that presents only ‘self-portraits’ among the various works of artist Suh Yongsun, who is immersed in a constant exploration of the nature of human beings who are marginalized in the fast-growing capitalist city under the big theme of people, city, and history.

Suh, who describes himself as a laborer who paints, looks at the human form through self-portraits. Faced with the artist’s expressionless face staring straight ahead on the screen, the viewer is invited to have a wordless conversation with the painting and reflect on themselves.

His work has already been recognized as an important work in Korean contemporary painting. His works are in the collections of many major domestic and international museums, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and he is currently exhibiting in Korea as well as in the United States, Germany, Japan, and Australia.
