UARTSPACE is pleased to announce Ji Yong-Ho’s solo exhibition from April 27 to May 28, 2022. In this exhibition, the artist will present 13 new works created using 3D modeling techniques.
‘Tire Mutant’, which has been producted for the past 10 years, has many physical limitations because it is produced while directly checking the overall shape due to the nature of the sculpture.
However, the 3D modeling technique can color, transform, distort, dismantle, combine, etc. after designing the desired shape, and elaborate expressions such as delicate movements of hair and muscles.
In addition, since information on lighting, color, material, and depth of all objects on the screen can be saved as a digital file and can be reused at any time, all possibilities can be tested on the screen. It is possible to predict even the shape of a work when it is completed, so it is possible to increase the scalability of the modeling and the autonomy of the work.
3D modeling technique
The works exhibited this time are four works that approached sculpture in a pictorial way, eight works that combined heterogeneous elements, and one work that showed the potential of new materials in sculpture. Among these, notable works are < Ram Head >, < Building Man >, and < Bull Man >.
In < Ram Head >, the colors flowed down as if they were scattered. The horizontal representation of the color without flowing down shows that the sculptural work has solved the difficulty of defying the law of gravity.
< Building Man > is a work that combines the upper body of a human with buildings. The world’s tallest Burj Khalifa in Dubai, New York’s iconic Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris are painted on a human body painted blue to express different elements as if they were one.
Building Man, Detail view,
< Bull Man > is a work that is cast with aluminum after printing with 3D modeling. This work, which hybridizes a human body with a bull’s head, gives a cold and sharp feeling due to the nature of the material. It can be evaluated as the work that best shows the strengths of the 3D modeling technique by maximizing the texture by expressing the muscles of the face and body in detail such as shape, material, color, and texture.

JI YONG-HO plans to further expand his new works with materials and techniques that were not used in his works in the future. Through this exhibition, I hope that you will pay attention to what methodologies and perspectives the artist approach to sculpture as contemporary art, and how the artist will unravel the artist’s new formativeness.
